Sawara City

Japan, the land of rising sun , is very rich in tradition and culture. In spite of the high development, it has maintained its pristine beauty, culture and tradition in tact. I had learned some thing about japan in school and during my Bachelor in Architecture, I had an opportunity to learn about the Japanese Architecture. After coming I had some opportunity to see, feel and perceive the architectural beauties of temples.

I had a dream to have a visit to traditional place in Kanto region of Japan with some background information. In this respect I had an opportunity to visit the SAWARA city through Chiba Tourism office. Commonly called as the Little EDO (Edo is the old name for Tokyo) , Sawara city has many things to offer that from the past Edo period. As an urban planner it is important to know about the preservation of the old setttings in the modern time when the commerce driven development is griping its pawns to the heritage sites throughout the world. It is however good to know that the historical town scape has been regarded as Important Preservation Districts by government.

First we went to the museum where the cultural things were very beautifully displayed. Sawara city is very famous for the 2 festivals in summer and fall seasons. It has been practiced for more than 300 years. Because of its cultural significance it has been designated as an Important intangible cultural property in 2004. Though we could not enjoy the real festival, we could feel the grandeur by looking at the museum.

Afterwards we went to the city center of Sawara. The old houses are beautifully lined up on the banks of Onogawa river. In the past, these houses were the active seat of merchandise. Even today some merchant houses and their shops are in operation. The city is also famous for surveyor Inoh Tadakata who first made the precise map of Japan. City has dedicated beautiful museum in his memory. Many new buildings have been designed in the traditional design though some are not with the similar construction material.

From the visit to Sawara, it can be learnt that we can best serve the local heritage even in the time of the modern development. We should also be grateful to our forefathers for their great accomplishment for us. If people cooperate each other we can save our tradition and culture which are important as they give us identity.

Enjoy the video too;

Sawara is worth to visit again. Single visit is not enough !!!

Aeronautical Museum

Aeroplane is one of the greatest achievement of human era. Man has long dream of flying up above the sky like a free bird. It became possible only after a long struggle and untiring efforts. Human being has conquered the sky. Aviation service has made the life quite convenient. Now the distance has been squeezed with the time and it became a usual phenomena. Main credit for the revolutionary invention of modern day aircraft goes to Wright brothers who made the successful flight in 1903 in USA.

I have a long dream to see the developmental history of aircraft. Though I have been in Japan for last 2 years it never came in mind that there is aeronautical museum to go. When I noticed that there is such a facility right here in Chiba I was very happy. I was lucky enough to notice the tour program about the sightseeing within Chiba by Chiba Prefecture Tourism Office. I was excited.

Aeronautical museum was nearby the Narita International Airport. Narita airport is the gate way to Japan. In the main entrance there is a prototype of aircraft similar to that built by Wright brothers. Seeing the model, I felt as if I were in Wright brother's time. Guide gave good orientation about the museum and its exhibited items. I entered the cockpit, touch the engine, and felt myself as a pilot for a time being. Though I am professionally doctor I became pilot! Really I was wondering!!! Many models of aircraft of different times were exhibited over there. I had some time to see the runway of Narita airport from where the landing and take off of aircrafts was clearly seen. I got the proper idea of the aircraft, its internal configuration, technology and material. I wish to stay for long time over there but it was not possible as we have to leave the museum to see to other beautiful places on the same day as per schedule. The aeronautical museum is worth visiting once you are in Japan. I am very much thankful to organizers for providing wonderful opportunity. Once again thank you very much.

Bird Swarm

Really it's a bird! It's a cloud! It's a bird cloud. In Denmark, big flock of 300,000 birds created a wavelike cloud. As per ornithologists (specialist of bird), these feathered friends really do prefer to roost together, and the massive formations are a sort of pre-roost ritual that take on these odd shapes. It is amazing ya ... and too mesmerizing.
Lets see the video too.

Global Competitiveness Report and Nepal

Since the inception of reporting from 2004, the Global Competitiveness Report shows the competitiveness of each country. Scored in 10, higher the marks more competitiveness is the country. The rankings are calculated from both publicly available data and the Executive Opinion Survey, a comprehensive annual survey conducted by the World Economic Forum together with its network of Partner Institutes (leading research institutes and business organizations) in the countries covered by the Report.

Switzerland tops the overall ranking in The Global Competitiveness Report 2009-2010. The USA falls one place to second position due to its weakening financial markets and macroeconomic stability. Singapore, Sweden and Denmark round out the top five. European economies continue to prevail in the top 10 with Finland, Germany and the Netherlands following suit. Britain has continued its fall from last year, moving down one more place this year to 13th.

Our neighbouring country China is on the top with ranking 29 while India ranks 49 , Srilanka 79, Pakistan 101, Bangladesh ranks 106, Nepal is at the bottom of the table .However ,it has improved by one point this year from 126 to 125 ranking. Due to continuous strike, factory closure and political instability has compounded the situation in Nepal. It can be hoped that in the coming years Nepal with new constitution will enroll in new economic dynamism and will lead into progress in every front.

New 'crisis satellites' launched

Wednesday, 29 July 2009

BBC has reported that New 'crisis satellites' has been launched from Baikonur cosmodromet in Kazaksthan to monitor the disasters. The satellites were launched atop a converted Soviet-era missile ( Dnepr rocket ). The Dnepr is a converted Soviet-era SS-18 intercontinental ballistic missile. The UK-DMC2 and Deimos-1 spacecraft have joined four platforms already in the sky that together form the Disaster Monitoring Constellation.

The network obtains rapid pictures of areas struck by natural calamities - such as floods, earthquakes and fire.
The imagery is used by governments and aid agencies to co-ordinate relief.

Nepal Hazard Risk Assessment

Nepal is hazard prone country to natural disasters. It ranks 11th in terms of earthquake risk and 30th in flood risk in the world. Each year many people lose their lives and properties to natural disasters. In this backdrop many national and international institutions are helping to mitigate the impacts of hazards by understanding them and implementing from the results.

Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) is going to undertake the Nepal Hazard Risk Assessment activity and will develop a synthesis report on Nepal’s major hazards, carrying out desk review of already available reports, studies analysis and assessments regarding vulnerability and hazards carried out at the national and sub-national levels, to present an overview of vulnerability assessment for the country, to develop detailed economic analysis using loss probability modeling of the country’s risk with projected economic losses form forecasted hazards, and map high risk geographic regions. The project will be jointly executed and in close collaboration with Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) and Center for International Studies and Cooperation (CECI). The study will be carried out in close collaboration with Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology, Ministry of Environment, Nepal etc. The project is funded by the World Bank and is planned from July 2009-November 2010.
It can be hoped that the outcome will help a lot in disaster mitigation activities.

Lord Pashupatinath

Lord Pashupatinath is the guardian deity of Nepal. Nepal is sanctified by his divine glory. He is one of the trinity of Hindu religion and consiered as the destroyer. The Pashupatinath temple is the supreme pilgrimage for every Hindu on this planet.

By worshipping at Pashupatinath temple, wealth, grandeur and prosperity are achieved physically and spiritually. It is also said that if a childless couple do puja and make vow to pashupatinath they will get child.

The following is of famous religious hymn normally on aired by Radio Nepal in the early morning in religious program. I have tried to circulate this by making video of this :

WINNERS VERSUS LOSERS

Winner has....

The Winner is always part of the answer;
The Loser is always part of the problem.

The Winner always has a program;
The Loser always has an excuse.

The Winner says, "Let me do it for you";
The Loser says, "That is not my job."

The Winner sees an answer for every problem;
The Loser sees a problem for every answer.

The Winner says, "It may be difficult but it is possible";
The Loser says, "It may be possible but it is too difficult.

"When a Winner makes a mistake, he says, "I was wrong";
When a Loser makes a mistake, he says, "It wasn't my fault."

A Winner makes commitments;
A Loser makes promises.

Winners have dreams;
Losers have schemes.

Winners say, "I must do something";
Losers say, "Something must be done.

"Winners are a part of the team;
Losers are apart from the team.

Winners see the gain;
Losers see the pain.

Winners see possibilities;
Losers see problems.

Winners believe in win-win;
Losers believe for them to win someone has to lose.

Winners see the potential;
Losers see the past.

Winners are like a thermostat;
Losers are like thermometers.

Winners choose what they say;
Losers say what they choose.

Winners use hard arguments but soft words;
Losers use soft arguments but hard words.

Winners stand firm on values but compromise on petty things;
Losers stand firm on petty things but compromise on values.

Winners follow the philosophy of empathy: "Don't do to others what you would not want them to do to you";
Losers follow the philosophy, "Do it to others before they do it to you.

"Winners make it happen;
Losers let it happen.

Winners plan and prepare to win.The key word is preparation.

Korean Man Dies Homeless With $100,000 in the Bank

SEOUL —
April 2009,

It has been reported in the international herad tribune that aa homeless South Korean man named Na Hae-dong died of cancer without being able to use a single penny of his life savings of $100,000 because he could not prove his identity to his bank, officials said Wednesday.

He was saving money into his bank account for a long time. In 1993, South Korea introduced an anti-corruption law that makes an account holder to prove that the account had been opened under the holder’s real name before withdrawing money. People were given a grace period during which they could transfer their money to real-name accounts. But it seems that he was not aware of that. After diagonising of cancer, he went to bank to take his savings. But he could not get because, officially, he did not exist. Local officials filed for court approval to give him an identity. Mr. Na died in the hospital on April 28 before before the court ruled .His savings were expected to be donated to the state.

Women's Rights

Though we all believe that men and women are equal, it is hard to feel that they are enjoying the equal rights. Everywhere we are seeing the discrimination and intimidation. I was thinking that it should not be the case of the educated and the developed nation like Japan. But the situation seems grim after reading the article from the Japan times which says that 33% married women are abused by husbands. The news follows like this:

A government survey released Tuesday shows that 33.2 percent of married women have experienced physical and mental abuse from their husbands, unchanged from the previous survey in 2005.Of the victims, 13.3 percent said they feared for their life, according to the Cabinet Office survey, which was conducted last October and November and covered 3,125 adults.
The survey found 13.6 percent of the women said they experienced violence from their boyfriends when they were in their teens to 20s. Of them, 21.9 percent feared for their life.
It found 13.6 percent of married women faced physical and mental abuse from their husbands in the past five years.Of them, 53.0 percent didn't ask anyone for help and 27.6 percent consulted friends or acquaintances. Only around 3 percent consulted police or a hospital and about 1 percent turned to prefectural help centers, lawyers or private shelters. Of those subjected to violence from their husbands, 34.4 percent said they were injured or psychologically harmed
It is high time that we all wake up to end all sort of violence to women and let create an environment where there is enough space for the human dignity.

New Urban Planning for Paris

After the 9 months study commissioned after the presidential order 10 master plan proposals have been put forwarded for the Paris city . The proposals aim to transform Paris and its surrounding suburbs into the first sustainable "post-Kyoto city," with expanded metro rail system and large parks.

The team comprises to renowned international stars like Richard Rogers and Christian de Portzamparc to French architects who are just beginning their careers. The ideas include to breakdown the isolation between the city core and the outlying areas besides making the city greener and sustainable thereby breaking the social evils that deeply exists in the society.

Among the most audacious is Mr. de Portzamparc's plan (see the photo), which proposes massive European train station just outside the city center which is supposed to link to the Eurostar train lines to London and Brussels, as well as to a new elevated maglev train that would run above the périphérique.

Mr. Rogers's ambitious plan include vast system of public parks connecting poor and middle-class neighborhoods and A new Métro line would ringing the outer city and train links to the city center.

All of the proposed projects recognize the strong linking between urban policy and social equality. All suggest ways to begin reversing the growing social divisions that mark the contemporary city.

It a high time that we learn from Paris to uplift the chaotic urban development of Kathmandu and other cities of Nepal. If the concerned people and agencies learn a little from this new initiative in Paris and try to implement in the field, then we will be heading to New Nepal of new and efficient cities as all know cities are the engines of the development.

Nepali becomes youngest Grand Master !

Anish Giri has become the youngest Grand Master (GM) in a prestigious chess tournament organised at Wijk Aan Zee, Holland by beating GM Edurado Iturrizaga of Venezuela.

Born to a Nepali father and a Russian mother in Holland, Anish completed his final norm on Saturday by beating GM Iturrizaga at the age of 14 years, 7 months and two days. It was a tough game wherein Anish turned the tide in mutual time scramble.

Anish thus became the youngest Grandmaster in the world presently having completed the title requirements in the 11th round of the traditional tournament. Anish is also one of those players who earned a GM title without being awarded the title of an International Master.

His virtual rating of 2528 has made him the 12th youngest grandmaster in history.

Goat detained over armed robbery!

Fri Jan 23, 2009
LAGOS (Reuters) – Police in Nigeria are holding a goat on suspicion of attempted armed robbery.

Vigilantes took the black and white beast to the police saying it was an armed robber who had used black magic to transform himself into a goat to escape arrest after trying to steal a Mazda 323.

"The group of vigilante men came to report that while they were on patrol they saw some hoodlums attempting to rob a car. They pursued them. However one of them escaped while the other turned into a goat," Kwara state police spokesman Tunde Mohammed told Reuters by telephone.

"We cannot confirm the story, but the goat is in our custody. We cannot base our information on something mystical. It is something that has to be proved scientifically, that a human being turned into a goat," he said.

Belief in witchcraft is widespread in parts of Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation. Residents came to the police station to see the goat, photographed in one national newspaper on its knees next to a pile of straw.

The New Hope!

Barack Obama, as a first Black to hold a greatest post, has taken the oath as a 44th President of the USA. People all over the world has hoped a new order of peace progress and prosperity during his tenure. Congratulation once again and wishing a great days ahead!

Full speech

"My fellow citizens:
I stand here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors. I thank President Bush for his service to our nation, as well as the generosity and co-operation he has shown throughout this transition.

Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath. The words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace. Yet, every so often the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms.

At these moments, America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because we, the people, have remained faithful to the ideals of our forbearers, and true to our founding documents. So it has been. So it must be with this generation of Americans.

Serious challenges

That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood. Our nation is at war, against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred. Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age. Homes have been lost; jobs shed; businesses shuttered. Our health care is too costly; our schools fail too many; and each day brings further evidence that the ways we use energy strengthen our adversaries and threaten our planet.

These are the indicators of crisis, subject to data and statistics. Less measurable but no less profound is a sapping of confidence across our land - a nagging fear that America's decline is inevitable, and that the next generation must lower its sights.

Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America - they will be met.

On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord.
On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics.

Nation of 'risk-takers'

We remain a young nation, but in the words of scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things. The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit; to choose our better history; to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea, passed on from generation to generation: the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free, and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness.

In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned. Our journey has never been one of short-cuts or settling for less. It has not been the path for the faint-hearted - for those who prefer leisure over work, or seek only the pleasures of riches and fame. Rather, it has been the risk-takers, the doers, the makers of things - some celebrated but more often men and women obscure in their labour, who have carried us up the long, rugged path towards prosperity and freedom.

For us, they packed up their few worldly possessions and travelled across oceans in search of a new life.
For us, they toiled in sweatshops and settled the West; endured the lash of the whip and ploughed the hard
earth. For us, they fought and died, in places like Concord and Gettysburg; Normandy and Khe Sahn.

'Remaking America'

Time and again these men and women struggled and sacrificed and worked till their hands were raw so that we might live a better life. They saw America as bigger than the sum of our individual ambitions; greater than all the differences of birth or wealth or faction.

This is the journey we continue today. We remain the most prosperous, powerful nation on earth. Our workers are no less productive than when this crisis began. Our minds are no less inventive, our goods and services no less needed than they were last week or last month or last year. Our capacity remains undiminished. But our time of standing pat, of protecting narrow interests and putting off unpleasant decisions - that time has surely passed. Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America.

For everywhere we look, there is work to be done. The state of the economy calls for action, bold and swift, and we will act - not only to create new jobs, but to lay a new foundation for growth. We will build the roads and bridges, the electric grids and digital lines that feed our commerce and bind us together. We will restore science to its rightful place, and wield technology's wonders to raise health care's quality and lower its cost. We will harness the sun and the winds and the soil to fuel our cars and run our factories. And we will transform our schools and colleges and universities to meet the demands of a new age. All this we can do. All this we will do.

Restoring trust

Now, there are some who question the scale of our ambitions - who suggest that our system cannot tolerate too many big plans. Their memories are short. For they have forgotten what this country has already done; what free men and women can achieve when imagination is joined to common purpose, and necessity to courage.

What the cynics fail to understand is that the ground has shifted beneath them - that the stale political arguments that have consumed us for so long no longer apply.

The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works - whether it helps families find jobs at a decent wage, care they can afford, a retirement that is dignified. Where the answer is yes, we intend to move forward. Where the answer is no, programs will end. And those of us who manage the public's dollars will be held to account - to spend wisely, reform bad habits, and do our business in the light of day - because only then can we restore the vital trust between a people and their government.

Nor is the question before us whether the market is a force for good or ill. Its power to generate wealth and expand freedom is unmatched, but this crisis has reminded us that without a watchful eye, the market can spin out of control - that a nation cannot prosper long when it favours only the prosperous. The success of our economy has always depended not just on the size of our gross domestic product, but on the reach of our prosperity; on the ability to extend opportunity to every willing heart - not out of charity, but because it is the surest route to our common good.

'Ready to lead'

As for our common defence, we reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals. Our founding fathers, faced with perils we can scarcely imagine, drafted a charter to assure the rule of law and the rights of man, a charter expanded by the blood of generations. Those ideals still light the world, and we will not give them up for expedience's sake. And so to all other peoples and governments who are watching today, from the grandest capitals to the small village where my father was born: know that America is a friend of each nation and every man, woman, and child who seeks a future of peace and dignity, and we are ready to lead once more.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with the sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

We are the keepers of this legacy. Guided by these principles once more, we can meet those new threats that demand even greater effort - even greater cooperation and understanding between nations. We will begin to responsibly leave Iraq to its people, and forge a hard-earned peace in Afghanistan. With old friends and former foes, we will work tirelessly to lessen the nuclear threat, and roll back the spectre of a warming planet. We will not apologise for our way of life, nor will we waver in its defence, and for those who seek to advance their aims by inducing terror and slaughtering innocents, we say to you now that our spirit is stronger and cannot be broken; you cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you.

'Era of peace'

For we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness. We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus - and non-believers. We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of this earth; and because we have tasted the bitter swill of civil war and segregation, and emerged from that dark chapter stronger and more united, we cannot help but believe that the old hatreds shall someday pass; that the lines of tribe shall soon dissolve; that as the world grows smaller, our common humanity shall reveal itself; and that America must play its role in ushering in a new era of peace.

To the Muslim world, we seek a new way forward, based on mutual interest and mutual respect. To those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflict, or blame their society's ills on the West - know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy. To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history; but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist.

To the people of poor nations, we pledge to work alongside you to make your farms flourish and let clean waters flow; to nourish starved bodies and feed hungry minds. And to those nations like ours that enjoy relative plenty, we say we can no longer afford indifference to suffering outside our borders; nor can we consume the world's resources without regard to effect. For the world has changed, and we must change with it.

'Duties'

As we consider the road that unfolds before us, we remember with humble gratitude those brave Americans who, at this very hour, patrol far-off deserts and distant mountains. They have something to tell us, just as the fallen heroes who lie in Arlington whisper through the ages. We honour them not only because they are guardians of our liberty, but because they embody the spirit of service; a willingness to find meaning in something greater than themselves. And yet, at this moment - a moment that will define a generation - it is precisely this spirit that must inhabit us all.

For as much as government can do and must do, it is ultimately the faith and determination of the American people upon which this nation relies. It is the kindness to take in a stranger when the levees break, the selflessness of workers who would rather cut their hours than see a friend lose their job which sees us through our darkest hours. It is the firefighter's courage to storm a stairway filled with smoke, but also a parent's willingness to nurture a child, that finally decides our fate.

Our challenges may be new. The instruments with which we meet them may be new. But those values upon which our success depends - honesty and hard work, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty and patriotism - these things are old. These things are true. They have been the quiet force of progress throughout our history. What is demanded then is a return to these truths.

What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility - a recognition, on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation, and the world, duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character, than giving our all to a difficult task.

'Gift of freedom'

This is the price and the promise of citizenship.
This is the source of our confidence - the knowledge that God calls on us to shape an uncertain destiny.
This is the meaning of our liberty and our creed - why men and women and children of every race and every faith can join in celebration across this magnificent mall, and why a man whose father less than 60 years ago might not have been served at a local restaurant can now stand before you to take a most sacred oath.

So let us mark this day with remembrance, of who we are and how far we have travelled. In the year of America's birth, in the coldest of months, a small band of patriots huddled by dying campfires on the shores of an icy river. The capital was abandoned. The enemy was advancing. The snow was stained with blood. At a moment when the outcome of our revolution was most in doubt, the father of our nation ordered these words be read to the people:

"Let it be told to the future world... that in the depth of winter, when nothing but hope and virtue could survive... that the city and the country, alarmed at one common danger, came forth to meet [it]."

America. In the face of our common dangers, in this winter of our hardship, let us remember these timeless words. With hope and virtue, let us brave once more the icy currents, and endure what storms may come. Let it be said by our children's children that when we were tested we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back nor did we falter; and with eyes fixed on the horizon and God's grace upon us, we carried forth that great gift of freedom and delivered it safely to future generations.

Thank you. God bless you. And God bless the United States of America".

Free vouchers to spur economy

Sun Jan 18,2009
TAIPEI, Taiwan – The government began Sunday to distribute spending vouchers to all Taiwanese, hoping the move could spur a buying spree across the island to help prop up the slowing economy.

Taiwan's economy has been undermined by the global economic slump, with demand for the island's high-tech exports dropping sharply in industrialized countries such as the United States. Long lines queued up Sunday at dispense centers where each person is handed a stack of vouchers valued at 3,600 New Taiwan dollars ($108). Many people then went straight to department stores or supermarkets to buy up daily necessities.

The government is giving away a total of NT$80 billion ($2.5 billion) worth of vouchers to each of the island's 23 million population. The measures were meant mainly to boost retail sales. But other businesses suffering faltering sales — from airlines, amusement parks, hotels, restaurants to publishing houses — also offer discount rates to attract consumers.

About 20 publishing houses joined hands to solicit subscribers, offering a year's subscription for any two magazines with NT$1,200 worth of vouchers."While you save the economy, you must also save our culture," said publisher Tuan Chung-chi. After collecting vouchers for his family of four, Taichung mayor Jason Hu said he will buy a fitness machine and then donate it to an orphanage.

In November, the Taiwan government projected a 2.12 percent economic growth for 2009, depending that various stimulus packages, such as attracting more Chinese tourists, could reach their targets. Several research groups, however, predict the economy could contract as much as 2 percent this year.

When authorities first unveiled the voucher plan in November, they said the measures were expected to add more than 0.6 percentage point to the GDP growth rate. But Vice President Vincent Siew said the vouchers' impact on the domestic economy may not be as great, with the world economic prospects looking gloomier now."We would be happy if the extra retail sales generated could slow a steeper decline of the economy," Siew said.

National Unity Day

Pousha 27 is the birthday of the late King Prithivi narayan Shah(1723 - 1775 A.D.; Nepali: पृथ्वी नारायण शाह) the great, the founder of the modern Nepal. He made the unification efforts after being king of Gorkha and was continued by his next generations with the help of the brave people and able warriors. It was because of his effort that present Nepal exists and we are proud to be Nepali. In the past the unification day was observed with national holiday. However after 2006 April Uprising the government has cut the holiday citing he is the ancestor of the unpopular King Gyanendra. However the common people and intellects cannot forget his great farsightedness in making a modern Nepal.

In this regards Kantipur Reports (Jan 11,2009) with the title All to follow Prithvi Narayan’s footsteps. The details is as foloows:

"Politicians and intellectuals on Sunday appealed to the government not to take lightly the contribution of the late king Prithvi Narayan Shah. Speaking at the programme titled “Prithvi Nar-ayan Shah and National Unity” organised by Reporters’ Club and Nepal Highlights, the speakers demanded that the government pay due respect to the late king as he is the founder of modern Nepal.

The leader of CPN-UML Modnath Prashrit said it was wrong to portray King Prithvi as a feudal and autocratic ruler. “He united small states engaged in fighting and formed Nepal at a time when Britain was preparing for an invasion,” Prashrit said. “Going by Karl Marx's philosophy of historical materialism, King Prithvi is a patriotic ruler.”

The vice-chairman of Rastriya Janashakti Party, Prakash Chandra Lohani, said King Prithvi’s contribution to the country cannot be undermined by demolishing his statue. King Shah’s concept of Nepal as a garden of all castes and ethnicities is a guiding principle for inclusiveness, Lohani said. By taking Nepal as a yam between two stones, King Prithvi has pointed to the need to adopt a balanced foreign policy with two neighbours — India and China — in mind, he said.

Speaking at the programme, culture expert Jang Man Gurung said Shah was a far-sighted king as he emotionally united people from small states.

Scholar Ramesh Dhungel flayed the government's decision not to celebrate Prithvi Jayanti, the birthday of the late king, and said the Maoist-led government was all set to forget the history of the country in the name of progressiveness. Two years ago, the government had cancelled the public holiday to mark the birthday of King Prithvi, which falls on the 27th of Poush".
In the name of New nepal, we cannnot ignore the past. It is pity that in Nepal, the trend of cursing the good leaders has been increasing. Everywhere in the world the leaders that united the countries are revered very much be it Gariwaldi in Italy or Bismark in Germany. Prithvi Naryanan must not be forgotten in the country where there is a culture of gratitude. No one will be motivated by such kind of activity to work for the country.We are destined to suffer if we do not learn from the history.
On this auspicious day of Unification, let us march towards the fraternity and the brotherhood, the inner quality of the Nepali Society. Let us foil the divisive political tactics of the foul leaders in the name of the new, inclusive and federal Nepal!

Mule Saved the Life!

7th Jan 2009
McMINNVILLE, Tenn. USA–

Lou the mule brayed his way into his owner's heart with a New Year's warning that her rural Tennessee home was on fire.

Jolene Solomon says the mule saved her life by alerting her to the attic blaze so that she could get out of the house before it burned down.

The Southern Standard in McMinnville reported Solomon had just finished supper on New Year's Day when Lou's braying and acting up got her attention. The 63-year-old — who lives alone — stepped outside and saw the fire.

The farm house in south-central Tennessee built by Solomon's grandfather was gutted. Solomon is staying with family while she plans to rebuild. Solomon said her father bought Lou years ago to help her and her late sister, Blue, around the farm.

Positive Attitude

......Author Unknown
She is 92 years old, petite, well poised, and proud. She is fully dressed each morning by eight o'clock, with her hair fashionably coifed, and her makeup perfectly applied, in spite of the fact she is legally blind. Today she has moved to a nursing home. Her husband of 70 years recently passed away, making this move necessary.

After many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home, where I am employed, she smiled sweetly when told her room was ready. As she maneuvered her walker to the elevator, I provided a visual description of her tiny room, including the eyelet curtains that had been hung on her window. "I love it," she stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year old having just been presented with a new puppy. "Mrs. Jones, you haven't seen the room....just wait," I said. Then she spoke these words that I will never forget: "That does not have anything to do with it," she gently replied. "Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time." Whether I like the room or not, does not depend on how the furniture is arranged. It is how I arrange my mind. I have already decided to love it. It is a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice. I can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty I have with the parts of my body that no longer work, or I can get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do work. Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open, I will focus on the new day and all of the happy memories I have stored away....just for this time in my life.

...................................................

You possess a God-given power to generate happiness. Create happiness for yourself by rejoicing with what you have! There are no "things" that will make you happy. You have to choose to be happy. Do it for yourself -- the time is now! *Smile*

Man's last lotto ticket wins $10M for widow!

4th Jan 2009..........................
DANBURY, Connecticut USA.
On the day that Donald Peters died, he unknowingly provided financial security for his wife of 59 years and their family.

Peters bought two Connecticut Lottery tickets at a local 7-Eleven store on Nov. 1 as part of a 20-year tradition he shared with his wife Charlotte. Later that day, the 79-year-old retired hat factory worker suffered a fatal heart attack while working in his yard in Danbury.

On Friday, his widow cashed in one of the tickets: a $10 million winner which, in her grief over her husband's death, she had put aside and almost discarded before recently checking the numbers.

"I'm numb," Charlotte Peters, 78, said at Connecticut Lottery headquarters in Rocky Hill.Donald Peters usually bought the tickets for 10 weeks at a stretch, so the winning ticket he bought Nov. 1 for the Dec. 2 drawing was among several that Charlotte Peters put aside as she, their three children and two grandchildren coped with his sudden death.

"I was in the grocery store and I had it checked and they told me I was a winner," she said. "I had no idea how much it was."She said she thought she had won $6 million but was surprised to learn from lottery officials she'd won $10 million.

Charlotte Peters has 60 days to decide whether to take a $6 million pre-tax lump sum payment or stretch the winnings into 21 yearly payments of almost $477,300 each.She does not yet know what she will do with the money.

"I've always wanted a Corvette, but I don't think I'll buy one. I'll stick to a small car. I might go to Mohegan Sun," she said, referring to the casino in Connecticut. "I'm going to go home and sit and think."

The Peters children think their father would have appreciated the irony."He'd be very mad, he just passed away and she won a lot of money," said Brian Peters, one of the couple's three children. "He'd say, 'Figures!'"

Stations to locate quake-prone zones

B Basnet ,(The Kathmandu Post)
KATHMANDU, Jan 3 ,2009-
The government has installed 24 Global Positioning System (GPS) stations across the country in order to monitor tectonic movement and identify earthquake-prone zones, said officials at the National Seismological Centre (NSC).

According to the officials, GPS stations were installed to monitor tectonic movement -- shifting of the earth's upper mantle -- which causes earthquakes in the Himalayan region.
"We completed GPS installation in October. These stations will help us identify earthquake-prone zones," said NSC chief Som Sapkota.

The stations will provide valuable information about the changes in the earth's layers and help us alert the government about potential danger, he said.

Experts say Nepal should be prepared for a high-magnitude earthquake, one potentially measuring 7 or more on the Richter scale. "The NSC also excavated at four places in Dhangadi and Mahottrari districts to find out the frequency of earthquakes in the past. This will help us know when earthquakes are likely to jolt particular regions," said Sapkota.

The NSC chief added that the discovery of earthquake frequency in a region is the most crucial information that can help minimise loss of life and property. Sapkota also informed that the NSC would produce a seismic hazard map soon.

Experts say Nepal lies in one of the most active seismic zones in the world. After the Indian subcontinent collided with the Tibetan Plateau some 45 million years ago, it has continued to drive under the plateau at a rate of two metres per century. This movement creates pressure between the landmasses. The pressure is released rapidly and results in earthquakes. Earthquakes frequently rattle Nepal. According to Dilli Ram Tiwari, survey officer at the NSC, Nepal experiences 10 small-scale earthquakes on average per day. He said most earthquakes are, however, rated under 4 on the Richter scale.

Earthquakes measuring over 4.8 on the Richter Scale are hazardous, he said. Nepal experienced its last destructive earthquake in 1934. It had the magnitude of 8.3. Experts say there will be massive loss of life and properties if an earthquake with 7-plus magnitude rocks the Kathmandu Valley.

According to National Society for Earthquake Technology-Nepal (NSET), the kind of soil in the Valley strongly influences the amount of damage caused during earthquakes. The valley is filled with soft sediment, as it rests on the bed of a prehistoric lake. Soft sediment amplifies the energy released by an earthquake at a greater degree than dense sediment does, causing greater damage.
